SpringHouse Restaurant near Lake Martin has Chris Hastings' touch

Chris Hastings gazes out the picture window of the new SpringHouse Restaurant near Lake Martin and takes in the panoramic postcard view that unfolds down below.

From the restaurant's hilltop setting, Hastings points to the clearing where developers will build a barn to house the horses and wagons, as well as the surrounding orchard that will soon blossom with apples, pears and persimmons. Far off in the distance, he can see a sliver of Lake Martin.

Hastings' mind races back two years ago, to when he, developer Ben Russell and other dreamers from Russell Lands drove out here in trucks to meet on that same hilltop and admire that same view.

"They looked out here," Hastings recalls, "and they said, 'OK, this is the spot. This is where we want our restaurant to be. This is going to be the statement restaurant for the lake.'"
